Use knowledge of the local labour and education market to support young people

Locate labour market information and education provider pathways for young people. Understand worker rights and regulations, indicators for appropriateness of workplaces and education options, and how to effectively negotiate and build beneficial relationships with employers and education providers.

Work effectively in a clinical mental health setting

Understand your role within a clinical mental health setting, including key legal and ethical considerations, responding to disclosures and managing challenging behaviours. Familiarise yourself with clinical language and relationships with clinical staff. Identify the key values of the IPS model and their application to youth mental health values and inclusive practice.

Facilitate career exploration and goal setting activities

Review career development theory and use a range of interventions and resources to facilitate conversations that explore a young person's interests, skills, values and career preferences. Apply ethical decision-making in a career development context as you set goals, plan and review career action plans with them.

Develop and maintain professional competence

Identify your personal and professional values and goals and explore their alignment with the delivery of the IPS program. Develop an understanding of how your individual development needs and priorities connect to your organisation’s strategic and operational goals, and how the employee development process improves professional outcomes.

Work with young people

Identify factors at play in a young person's health and wellbeing and understand how they impact work and study. Develop strategies to communicate and engage with young people, addressing potential stigma and discrimination they may encounter. Build skills in supporting neurodiverse, LGBTQIA+, First Nations and trauma-exposed young people.

Apply ethical principles to IPS practice

Explore important IPS ethical considerations, legal responsibilities and the duty of care required when interacting with young people, families, carers and colleagues. Employ a strengths-based, person-centred approach in supporting young people, and confidently support disclosure discussions, explaining risks and benefits, and legislation relevant to mental health at work.

Support young people to prepare for employment or education opportunities

Identify key components of a career portfolio, including resumes, cover letters, selection criteria and digital profiles, and recruitment technology. Understand the Australian education system and learn strategies to support young people prepare for education and training.

Support young people to secure and maintain employment or education

Use vocational assessments to inform job search strategies and connect young people to relevant opportunities and career pathways. Engage with employers to build effective job placement partnerships and with education providers to support a young person’s study goals and employability. Identify support options to help a young person overcome challenges and maintain employment or education.

Raise awareness of the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program

Learn how to apply a range of techniques to share the important work of your local IPS program, raising awareness as widely as possible within your local community. Create compelling promotional materials and presentations and identify opportunities to build external partnerships to enhance the IPS program and support headspace activities.

Develop IPS supervisor skills and facilitate career development

Build a supervisory practice to support IPS workers for the employment lifecycle, including recruiting, onboarding, performance review and career development.
